Technology Today: Heather Meeker on Open Source Software

Open source has come a long way from its early days, making it into the mainstream. Many large organizations use technologies such Linux, Apache, and MySQL these days.

To this end, I recently spoke with my friend Heather Meeker, intellectual property attorney and author of The Open Source Alternative: Understanding Risks and Leveraging Opportunities and A Primer on Intellectual Property Licensing Heather is also a contributor to my next book and one of the foremost authorities on the legal side of open source.

    Very interesting podcast. I agree that the lack of good support is a major downside of open source software. When you find any bugs in an open source CMS, you’il just have to scour the forums in order to hopefully get some kind of answer.

    However, open source seems to be getting more and more popular everyday. It won’t be long before free software will be the standard, I think!

    I have my doubts about whether OS will be the standard. Is it making inroads? Of course. Will it supplant many of the apps out there anytime soon? Too soon to tell.

    Interesting and very relax te listen instead of read :-)
    OS is still not really my thing, allthough I believe it will be the future, if I see the amount of addons and plugins being developed for OS Content Management Systems for example. OS is just a great way to keep thing up to date.
