Jay Baer of Convince & Convert interviews me about the new book.

Phil Simon is a technology cupid. Whatever your company’s issues or objectives, he can recommend the optimal platform, rollout strategy, and operational considerations. In his work as a tech consultant, he’s realized the days of “big iron” – solving problems with huge, expensive systems are gone. Now, it’s the nimble, inexpensive technology that rules. So much so, he wrote a new book (his third) about it called The New Small: How a New Breed of Small Businesses is Harnessing the Power of Emerging Technologies.

I interviewed Phil earlier this year about his previous book, and it’s great to have his sharp thinking back at Convince & Convert.

Historically, big technology had the advantage because it was safe and reliable. “Nobody ever got fired for hiring IBM” is the old saying. But now, it seems like small tech has the edge. How can that be? What changed?

Many things changed. Broadband exploded. Storage costs plummeted. Freemium took off as a business model. A massive wave of innovation occurred. Other tech events and trends made the New Small possible. Factor in a drop in job security and a desire for people to do their own thing and suddenly it’s hip to start your own company.

ESPN's Buster Olney and I talk about our books.

I’ll be appearing on ConversationsLive! with Cyrus Web at 1 p.m. EST today with ESPN’s Buster Olney. Now, I suspect that Cyrus will once again ask me about The New Small and Buster will probably be talking about his own new book. But, as I sit here early in the morning, I can’t help but wonder if I’ll be able to talk a little baseball with Buster.

I watch Buster pretty regularly on ESPN and I’d like to ask him about this completely ridiculous Derek Jeter contract situation. I’m sure that I’ll incur the wrath of all Jeter fans, but this is insane. The guy’s skills are clearly diminishing, both offensively and defensively. Rumor has it that the Yankees have offered this guy $15M/yr for three years–and Jeter’s insulted. Where else is this guy going to go? Of course, I really don’t care that much. Tennis and golf are my main sports this days. But I do like to mix it up with folks in mainstream sports.

Yes, he’s Mr. Yankee. I get it. And the Yankees can basically print money. But this is a completely fair offer and I can’t understand why Jeter is offended.

But that’s me.

I recently did an interview with author Sue Collier about self-publishing. Here’s a sample:

What is your background? I am an independent technology consultant, author, writer, and dynamic public speaker for hire. I focus on the intersection of business and technology and have written two books: Why New Systems Fail and The Next Wave of Technologies. My next book is called The New Small and will be out in November. I also write for a number of technology media outlets and sites and host the podcast Technology Today.

Last week, Phil Green and I had an interesting discussion on InMagic about semantic web. Questions included:

What is the semantic web anyway?

Why should we care about it?

When is it coming?

Is it already here?

Who’s driving its adoption?

After you listen to the podcast, get your tweet on. InMagic is giving away a copy of my new book, The Next Wave of Technologies to one lucky winner.
