Fast Cheap Good

There’s a great adage in the software world:

Fast, cheap, and good. Pick any two of the three.

In building my consulting practice over the years, I quickly decided that I wouldn’t compete on price.

So I don’t. And I have applied the same principles to my speaking and writing practices as well. It’s my firm belief that you get what you pay for.

I have cultivated nearly clients from a wide variety of industries including information technology, media, publishing, health care, manufacturing, retail, telecommunications, education, and the public sector. Since starting as an independent consultant in 2002, I have worked with many different people and organizations using different technologies in many different ways. Big and small. Progressive and conservative. You name it.

Many of my clients bring me back, sometimes years after the initial engagement. This isn’t because I hoard knowledge and don’t document my work or findings. Quite the contrary. I’m big on sharing and communication. I have high client satisfaction and retention rates because, on each project, I endeavor to:

  • honestly assess the work, resources, and time required
  • perform the work expected
  • broach issues and risks with responsible parties in a timely fashion
  • make myself expendable
  • manage expectations
  • underpromise
  • overdeliver

In short, as I wrote in a post on 06/19/2010, my approach to work is long-term greedy.
